Little miss make up
Welcome back to my blog.
Today I am going to explain to you about dysautonomia and POTS (postural orthostic tachycardia syndrome). I am going to explain this condition because I suffer from it and I also want to raise awareness to help others.
What is dysautonomia?
Dysautonomia is an umbrella term used to describe several different medical conditions that cause a malfunction of the autonomic nervous system.
Autonomic nervous system;
This controls the 'autonomic' functions of the body. These are functions in which we don't consciously think about. Such things like heart rate, blood pressure, digestion, dilation and construction of the pupils, kidney function and tempature control. Due to this people like me with various forms of dysautonomia have trouble regulating these systems.
I constantly struggle with my tempature control and if I over heat my whole body turns red. My face swells it's very difficult to breath. My arms and legs cramp up and I can't move. My heart rate goes sky high to the point where u can see it beating in my chest. When this happens I must strip and get cold face cloths to try bring down my tempature. Drink cold water and eat salty crips or crackers. Someone has to feed me the Crisps and give me the water due to my been cramped up. When my tempature comes down it drops really low to the point where my body is trembling with the cold but I can't cover myself as my skin still remains really red. These episode can last for about half an hour. I struggle to stay concious during these. Afterwards my body is exhausted and I normally need to sleep afterwards as it takes a lot out of me.
Symptoms of dysautonomia are lightheadedness, fainting, unstable blood pressure, abnormal heart rate, malnutrition and in severe cases death.
There are three different forms of dysautonomia, which are;
-postural orthostic tachycardia syndrome (POTS).
-neurocardiogenic syncope (NCS).
-multiple system atrophy (MSA).
Today I am going to talk about POTS. This is the form I suffer from.
POTS is a form of orthostic intolerance that is associated with the presence of excessive tachycardia and many other symptoms upon standing.
Those symptoms include;
-raised heart rate and drop in blood pressure upon standing.
- excersize intolerance
-short of breath
-fluctuations in weight
Symptoms woren with prolonged sitting or standing, alcohol, heat , excersize or eating a large meal.
This post ended up been very long, so sorry but wanted to give ye as much information as I could. I will do a follow up post to this.
Hope ye found this interesting and it has help raise awareness.
I will add a photo of me at the start of a episode I was having.
